The abandoned-cart follow-up a person should send

Your sequence handles the small carts. The big ones deserve a person, a name, and the right channel. Here is how to pick them and what to send.

Most abandoned-cart sequences treat every cart the same. One email at an hour, one at a day, maybe a code at three days. That is fine for a $40 cart. It is a waste of a $400 one.

The carts worth a person are the ones where a person changes the outcome: a client who has bought before, a cart with several pieces, a size that is nearly sold out. Those customers were close. They do not need a discount. They need someone to make it easy to finish.

Pick the carts

Start with a list, not a rule. Pull every cart abandoned in the last seven days and sort by value. Then mark three things against each one:

  • Has this customer bought before? A returning client who leaves a cart is telling you something changed at checkout, not that they lost interest.
  • What is in it? Several pieces, a bespoke option, or a size with two units left all raise the stakes.
  • What did the sequence already do? If they got two emails and opened neither, a third email is not the answer.

Ask Beya:

Which customers abandoned a cart over £300 this week, and which of them have ordered before?

You get the customers, the pieces, and the cart value, with the sequence’s own sends alongside. That is the list.

Pick the channel

If the customer has replied to you on WhatsApp before, use WhatsApp. If they only ever came through email, use email but from a person’s address, not the sequence’s. A high-value cart that gets a templated email first and a personal note never is the most common way to lose a sale you had already made.

Write the note

Keep it to three lines. Name the piece, not the cart. Remove one obstacle. Make the next step a reply, not a link.

Hi Sarah, I saw the Wide-Leg in size 12 in your bag. We have two left in that size, so I’ve held one for you until Friday. Want me to add the matching top, or send it as is?

No code, no urgency copy, no “we noticed you left something behind.” The customer knows what they left.

When to send

Same day if the cart was left in the afternoon. Next morning if it was left at night. After that, the value of a personal note drops fast, and the sequence should take it from there.

Run it with Beya

Beya’s abandoned-cart recovery keeps the list current from Shopify, joins it to what your sequence already sent, and drafts the note in the customer’s channel. You approve it in the thread and it goes out logged against the cart. A cart that converts drops off the list the moment the order lands.

Draft a WhatsApp follow-up for the top ten carts from this week.
